Airline Safety - The Best It's Ever Been

US Airways Ranked Safest Among Major Network Carriers

As recently reported by U.S. News & World Report, US Airways was ranked 1st in safety among major network carries and 3rd overall in airline safety. The study included U.S. major air carriers with more than 600 daily flights. It focused on factors that could only be contributed to each airline and ignored events that were strictly random and totally out of their control, such as bird collisions, lightning strikes, or unruly passengers.

Many of the incidents that occurred were the result of precautionary landings or diversions for minor abnormalities. Typically a flight crew errs on the side of caution when presented with a situation they cannot remedy or easily confirm. It was interesting to note that the last fatal US Airline accident took place in February 2009.

In 2010, US Airways had 24 documented incidents out of approximately 1,131,865 flights. This gave them an incident per flight equivalent of 0.0000212. David Castelveter, former Vice President, Communications for the Air Transport Association of America (ATA) was quoted stating "safety of all U.S. carriers is the best it ever has been." The employees of US Airways should be commended for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of their airline every day.
